Bermuda & South Pacific Vacations for Chinese Uighur Muslim Terrorists

The British Government responded with ill-disguised fury tonight to the news that four Chinese Uighurs [pronounced we-gurs] freed from Guantanamo Bay had been flown for resettlement on the Atlantic tourist paradise of Bermuda.

The four arrived on Bermuda in the early hours, celebrating the end of seven years of detention after learning that they were to be accepted as guest workers.

But it appears that the Government of Bermuda failed to consult with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on the decision to take in the Uighurs – whose return is demanded by Beijing – and it could now be forced to send them back to Cuba or risk a grave diplomatic crisis.

Bermuda, Britain's oldest remaining dependency, is one of 14 overseas territories that come under the sovereignty of the United Kingdom, which retains direct responsibility for such matters as foreign policy and security.

The four freed men – Abdul Nasser, Huzaifa Parhat, Abdul Semet and Jalal Jalaladin – were among 17 men from the largely Muslim Chinese minority groups still held in Guantanamo Bay.

After seven years of extra-judicial detention, the men did not appear to mind which island paradise they ended up in – and formally thanked for Bermuda for taking them.

“Growing up under communism, we always dreamed of living in peace and working in free society like this one,” Abdul Nasser, one of the four, said in a statement released through his lawyers. “Today you have let freedom ring."

For the past four years, the Uighurs have been held at Camp Iguana, a low-security facility in Guantanamo Bay, with views of the Caribbean and pizza deliveries.

Ewart Brown, the Bermudian Premier, said that the United States had agreed to bear the costs associated with relocating the men on the island.

In a statement, Mr Brown said the men have “the opportunity to become naturalised citizens and thereafter afforded the right to travel and leave Bermuda, potentially settling elsewhere", although he said that the resettlement of the inmates was still contingent on the advice from Britain.

By the way, the rest of the Guantanamo Uighurs will be at least temporarily rehoused on the South Pacific island paradise of Palau.

This certainly is interesting news for all of us who didn't take up residence in terrorist training camps in Afghanistan to enjoy (as the Uighurs claimed) the "freedom" there. I wonder how much consideration our empathic president gave to the effect on the morale of our brave military folks slugging it out in war zones and recovering from injuries in VA hospitals, and the feelings of their families slugging it out with the economy at home, when they hear about this one.

Assault on GM Gets Personal at Fox News

Fox News personality, Gretchen Carlson, wasn't happy when her parents' GM dealership in Anoka, Minnesota, which has been in her family for 90 years, got the pink slip from GM even though the dealership has consistently exceeded sales goals and employs 80 people.

But Carlson was even more upset to find out that another GM dealer, who lost a dealership in the first wave of GM shut-downs, regained that dealership after Minnesota Democrat Senator Amy Klobuchar intervened (via Jeff Poor of Business & Media Institute).

It didn't help that her parents have to sign GM's "gun-to-the-head" wind-down agreement by Friday or lose their ability to sell the GM cars that they already have purchased. That agreement includes a gag order forbidding terminated GM dealers to speak to anyone except their employees about their loss of their business.

In the video below, Judge Napolitano describes why the treatment of terminated GM dealers is blatantly unconstitutional and unlawful six ways from Sunday. Charles Payne points out that Obama-run businesses like GM and AIG are being used as conduits to get money to other places. For example, last week GM lent a private equity firm $2 billion to buy Delphi out of bankruptcy and AIG was used as a conduit to offer $100 billion in aid to European banks.

This is not a surprise, Payne pointed out: We were told by Obama himself that redistribution would take place.

Thank you, Obama voters.

Glenn Beck adds that our stability as a nation is what has made us a good investment risk. What will happen to Americans when legal and financial outcomes that have been predictable in this country since its founding have been made unpredictable because contracts and laws don't mean anything anymore?

What choices will we make as individuals, when we can't rely on our Constitution and our legal system?

New York State Tea Party - June 16th!

On Monday in the New York State Senate chambers, the majority was changed from Democrat to Republican when two dissident Democrat senators joined with 30 Republican senators to take over control of the Senate. Thomas Golisano, billionaire businessman and one of many who are fleeing New York State's increasing income-tax burden by changing their residences to other states, took credit for conspiring with a small group of senators to pull off the coup.

Within hours, the Senate got a new majority leader and temporary president.

As pointed out by Lee Cary at American Thinker, and well worth repeating, Florida Democrat, Representative Alan Grayson, was "shocked to find out that NOBODY at the Federal Reserve" is keeping track of who got the more than $1+ trillion the Fed lent out since last September. Not to mention the whereabouts of $9.7 trillion in pledged money reported by Bloomberg.com, that NOBODY seems to know who is getting or for what purpose.

A trillion here, a trillion there. What's $9.7 trillion? According to Bloomberg:

The $9.7 trillion in pledges would be enough to send a $1,430 check to every man, woman and child alive in the world. It’s 13 times what the U.S. has spent so far on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to Congressional Budget Office data, and is almost enough to pay off every home mortgage loan in the U.S., calculated at $10.5 trillion by the Federal Reserve.

I guess I'd better get back to work to put my share of earnings into covering that ocean of debt. Remind me about Obama's record of accountability and transparency the next time the IRS requires me to keep track of my savings account interest so I can hand over their cut.

"If We Have to Die, Let's Die on the Hill": Voices of American Heroes at D-Day

Today marks the 65th anniversary of D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, the day that American and British forces gained a foothold on Nazi-occupied France and began a march to Berlin that resulted in the liberation of Europe.

That day's price of freedom was 9,000 killed or wounded, about 6,600 of whom were Americans. The invasion involved 160,000 troops, 5,000 ships, and 13,000 aircraft, representing huge inputs of American natural resources, industry, labor, and treasure.

Today, like every other day of late, many people are worried that our generation of Europeans and Americans are squandering the freedoms purchased with such terrible sacrifices.

The words of the American heroes who fought on the beaches of Normandy are worth considering, always, but especially the next time someone explains to you why it is okay for American leaders to be apologizing for America, and why it is a bad idea for America to have military strength:

Interesting that zakat should come up in Obama's speech to an Arab audience yesterday, and even more interesting that it should come up in the context of freedom of religion, not exactly a major concern for Muslims, never mind liberals or socialists. Separation of church and state: that's a staple of Democrat foot-stamping talking points. You know, "Too bad the Taliban blew the head off an ancient Buddha carved into the Hindu Kush mountains and isn't it awful that people are rotting in Islamic jails or dead for sneaking a peak at a Bible, but get your (religious symbol, book, or quotation of your choice) out of my public square, right now, you bigot!" That separation of church and state.

What is zakat, anyway? The Thomas More Law Center offers an answer:

The zakat is a religious tax used to financially support Islamic "charities," some of which have ties to terrorist organizations that are hostile to the United States and all other “infidels,” which includes Christians and Jews.

The Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, an example of an Islamic “charity” that qualifies for receipt of the zakat, was recently convicted by a federal jury for providing millions of dollars to Islamic terrorist organizations.

The reason that the Thomas More Law Center offers a definition of this soon-to-become a household word is that the Law Center just got the go-ahead in to bring a lawsuit against Treasury Secretary Timothy Geitner and the Federal Reserve Board for using taxpayer funds to help Muslim religious authorities collect these religious taxes.

A federal judge has ruled that a lawsuit will go forward concerning the government bailout of insurance giant American International Group, or AIG.

Brian Rooney of the Thomas More Law Center says the company engages in sharia-compliant insurance to fulfill tenets of the Muslim faith.

"There's a certain amount of interest that you cannot take under sharia, and anything above that interest has to be cleansed," he notes. "And they have a board of imams at AIG that cleanse this interest. The only way to cleanse it is to send it to Islamic charities."

Thus:

As a direct consequence of the taxpayer funds appropriated and expended to purchase and financially support AIG, the federal government is now the owner of a corporation engaged in the business of collecting religious taxes to fund interests adverse to the United States, Christians, Jews, and all other “infidels” under Islamic law.

To many, if not most, Americans, the term "religious authority" does not set off serious alarm bells. But many Muslim religious authorities in charge of deciding where the obligatory religious tax gets sent are not your typical rabbi, minister, priest, or lama.

Sometimes, actual often, the decision maker deciding where the zakat is going to go is Dr. Muhammed Imran Ashraf Usmani, from Pakistan, who sits on the 3-man (talk about glass ceilings!) Shariah Supervisory Board at AIG.

Dr. Usmani is the son, student, and dedicated disciple of Mufti Taqi Usmani, who is the leading Shariah authority for Shariah-compliant finance in the world and the author of a book translated into English in 1999 that includes an entire chapter dedicated to explaining why a Western Muslim must engage in violent jihad against his own country or government.

A very interesting presentation, Shariah-compliant Finance: Benign? or Belligerent? by attorney David Yerushalmi, an expert in security transactions and Shariah-compliant financing will interest you in further investigation of Obama's innocuous-sounding plans, according to his Cairo speech, to "deepen ties between business leaders, foundations and social entrepreneurs in the United States and Muslim communities around the world."

When Obama gets interested in using taxpayer dollars to pass the collection plate, surely it is of some interest to follow the money.

As our socialist president tours the Middle East, making promises that most Americans undoubtedly won't want to keep, it is appropriate to take a few moments to remember the Tiananmen Square massacre, which took place 20 years ago today.

On June 4, 1989, in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, hundreds of thousands of disenchanted Chinese citizens had been protesting for almost 2 months, calling for democracy and a free market. Then the government moved in, demonstrating once again the eternal lesson that every scrap of individual freedom is purchased at a terrible price. American socialists take note.

Oops. Obama Administration Caught Promoting Shariah Law

Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner and the Federal Reserve Board had another bad day last week when they went up against U.S. District Judge Lawrence P. Zatkoff, a judge who actually supports the U.S. Constitution.

It seems that, when Obama et al. took over AIG in an $85 billion bailout back in September, the U.S. government also assumed responsibility for AIG's activities. One of those activities is fostering "a number of links between charities that receive funds as a result of Shariah-compliant financing and 'terrorist organizations that are hostile to the United States,'" at least according to a lawsuit brought by a federal taxpayer represented by the Thomas More Law Center.

What is Shariah-compliant financing? Financial operations especially designed to follow Islamic law, which, not surprisingly, requires charitable contributions to jihad.

The Washington Times editorialized:

Regardless of jihad, there is no dispute that, as U.S. District Judge Lawrence P. Zatkoff wrote on May 26, "AIG is the market leader in Sharia-compliant financing, which features financial products that comply with the dictates of Islamic law." It's undisputed that the government, as a result of last fall's bailout, now owns 77.9 percent of the "aggregate voting power of the common stock" of AIG. Furthermore, Judge Zatkoff wrote, "after the government acquired a majority interest in AIG ... the government co-sponsored a forum entitled 'Islamic Finance 101.' "

Why is all this important? Because in the case of Kevin J. Murray v. Timothy F. Geithner and Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, Mr. Murray argues that if the government owns AIG and AIG extensively practices Shariah-compliant finance, then the government effectively is supporting Islam. That would be unconstitutional.

According to the lawsuit, taxpayer funds were used to "approve, promote, endorse, support, and fund. . . Shariah-based Islamic religious activities," thus violating the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution."

As the Law Center pointed out:

With the aid of taxpayer funds provided by Congress, AIG employs a “Shariah Supervisory Committee,” which is comprised of the following members: Sheikh Nizam Yaquby from Bahrain, Dr. Mohammed Ali Elgari from Saudi Arabia, and Dr. Muhammed Imran Ashraf Usmani from Pakistan. Dr. Usmani is the son, student, and dedicated disciple of Mufti Taqi Usmani, who is the leading Shariah authority for Shariah-compliant finance in the world and the author of a book translated into English in 1999 that includes an entire chapter dedicated to explaining why a Western Muslim must engage in violent jihad against his own country or government.

Richard Thompson, President and Chief Counsel of the Thomas More Law Center had this to say:

It is outrageous that AIG has been using taxpayer money to promote Islam and Shariah law, which potentially provides support for terrorist activities aimed at killing Americans. Shariah law is the same law championed by Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban. It is the same law that prompted the 9/11 terrorist attacks on our soil that killed thousands of innocent Americans.

Geithner and the Fed wanted Judge Zatkoff to dismiss the case before it went to trial but, as the Thomas More Law Center reported, "Judge Zatkoff held that the lawsuit sufficiently alleged a federal constitutional challenge to the use of taxpayer money to fund AIG’s Islamic religious activities."

The Washington Times saw it this way:

In a devastating 16-page decision, Judge Zatkoff slapped down Mr. Geithner and company, allowing the case to go forward. The judge acknowledged that the government bought AIG only to stave off an apparent crisis. He then wrote: "Times of crisis, however, do not justify departure from the Constitution."

Well said.

Unfortunately, as Judge Zatkoff knows and as Richard Thompson of the Thomas More Law Center temperately observed, "We won this skirmish. But the war to stop the federal government from funding Islam and Shariah-compliant financing is far from over."

Another Recent Convert to Islam . . .

Gathering of Eagles: NY has just posted the identity of the shooter of two American soldiers in Little Rock, Arkansas:

Another recent convert to Islam, Abdulhaqim Mujahid Muhammad, aka Carlos Bledsoe, decided to practice his knew belief in the “Religion of Peace” by emptying the magazine of his semi-automatic rifle at two American soldiers [sic]. The two soldiers had recently completed Army basic training and were deployed back to their home town as part of the “Hometown Recruiting Assistance” program. The soldiers were taking a break outside the doors of an Army/Navy Career Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, at about 10am, when the terrorist pulled up in his Ford SUV, unloaded his magazine, and sped off.

Private William Long, 23, of Conway, AR, was killed in the fusillade. Private Quinton Ezeagwula, 18, of Jacksonville, AR, was seriously wounded.

At an afternoon press conference, police stated that the terrorist attacked the soldiers for “ideological reasons” and “with the specific purpose of targeting the military”. Left unstated was whether Bledsoe was converted in prison.

This is the latest and most deadly of a string of planned attacks on military personnel in the United States by Islamic fanatics. We wrote recently about the planned attack on the Air National Guard in Newburgh, NY, and others have written about the planned attack on Fort Dix in New Jersey.

According to David Koon at the Arkansas Times, Muhammad , age 24, specifically targeted soldiers for the attack but did not know his victims. "He has a disagreement with military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Police Chief Stuart Thomas. "'At this point,' LRPD Chief Stuart Thomas said, 'we believe that it's associated with his disagreement over military operations. We believe that primarily it is a religious disagreement, and that he has a dislike for military personnel and military actions.'"

Another valuable young life destroyed by an enemy Islamic terrorist. Another brave young man seriously wounded for no reason other than his willingness to defend and protect American freedoms.

Connecticut Tells Pastors: My Way or the Highway

So you think telling White firefighters that they can't get promoted because, well, they're White is a little over the top? How about telling Catholics that they can't practice their religion because, well, they're . . . Catholic.

Separation of Church and State? Not if Connecticut can help it.

In March, in a stealth attack, the Connecticut legislature targeted the Catholic Church with proposed legislation that would require the Church to reorganize its parishes along lines mandated by the State. This reorganization would strip priests and the bishop of any authority in their own parishes.

For the moment, other religious denominations have escaped the legislature's terrifying defiance of the First Amendment, for strategic reasons no doubt. It's probably better not to take on every Christian in Connecticut at the same time. Bill 1098 singled out only Catholic parishes for the radical reorganization of their legal, financial, and administrative structures, in direct violation of Church law and that pesky First Amendment, which states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. . . ." With only a few days to respond, the Diocesan Web site exclaimed:

This bill . . . is a thinly-veiled attempt to silence the Catholic Church on the important issues of the day, such as same-sex marriage.

Not surprisingly, Connecticut Catholics regarded the bill as a direct attack on their Faith. As Bishop William E. Lori explained:

[O]ur Diocese responded in the most natural, spontaneous, and frankly, American, of ways: we alerted our membership – in person and through our website; we encouraged them to exercise their free speech by contacting their elected representatives; and, we organized a rally at the State Capitol.

After 4000 Catholics dropped everything else to attend the rally, Bill 1098 headed for the recycle bin, temporarily preserving freedom of religion in Connecticut.

But the State fought back. If you're going to harass people for their religious beliefs, better give them a really hard time. A few weeks after the rally, the Office of State Ethics informed Bishop Lori that, by opposing the bill, the Church had violated state lobbying laws. Enter possible civil penalties, criminal prosecution, and the not-to-be-neglected usual (or perhaps unusual) administrative burdens and intrusive State oversight.

The State's complaints: Catholics had rallied at the State Capitol without having their Church register as a lobbyist. Moreover, Catholics had used their Web site to urge other Catholics to contact their elected representatives. Not only had Catholics opposed the forced parish reorganization bill, they had opposed a same-sex marriage bill.

Seems like the Catholic organization was a bit too well organized for the State's liking.

This past Friday, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport sought a court order to stop Connecticut from this unconstitutional application of state lobbying laws. In a blog titled, "This is the Constitution State?," Bishop Lori wrote:

“Lobbying”? Exhortations from the pulpit, information posted to the world wide web, a rally in the middle of the day on the State’s most public piece of property? This cannot possibly be what our Legislature had in mind when it enacted lobbying laws to bring more transparency and oversight to a legislative process that has been corrupted by special interests and backroom deals.

Unfortunately, this new action cannot be seen as anything other than an attempt to muzzle the Church and subject our right of free speech to government review and regulation. This government action tramples on the First Amendment freedoms of speech, assembly, and religion, and should shock the conscience of all citizens of the Constitution State.

That's putting it mildly. Bishop Lori concluded:

As a Bishop, I will take every measure possible to defend our faith and our Church from attempts to silence us – and our individual parishes could be targeted next.

Whatever they're putting in Connecticut's water, I hope Judge Sonia Sotomayor isn't drinking too much of it.

And I hope they don't bottle it and ship it over state lines.

Some folks are wise and some are otherwise

For excellent reasons, conservatives have been comparing Sonia Sotomayor's so-called "compelling background" with those of a number of highly qualified judges who overcame serious obstacles on their paths to success before having their ascent to a District or Circuit court sabotaged by Democrats. Other parallels have been drawn between her background and that of minority politicians and political advisors. As a party, Democrats have enthusiastically displayed their intended lack of racial bias by viciously attacking members of minority groups who happened to be not only highly accomplished but also conservative in their viewpoints.

Sotomayor and her sponsor, Barack Obama, have gone out of their way to wrap the judge in the flag of a Bronx tenement, but, as J. C. Arenas at American Thinker pointed out:

Sotomayor can keep playing the poor, underprivileged Boricua, but let's be real, she's spent her childhood in private school environments, early adulthood amongst the Ivy League elite, and most of her adulthood as a corporate attorney and judge living in Greenwich Village, where the average household income tops that of the entire NY metro area and 98% of the residents are White. I guess that's what she means by her rich experience.

But step a micron or two outside the box and compare the "richness" of Sotomayor's life experience with that of a woman who is neither black nor a Latina, as briefly described by Victor Davis Hanson (via Snaggletoothie of the Loyal Opposition):

I would have thought that a female candidate for vice president who came from Wasilla, Alaska, and with three children at the time volunteered to get involved in community projects, then served on the city council (and as a member of a small town I can assure you that being a mayor of a small town is no easy thing), and, after doing that, running for national office in Alaska as lieutenant governor, and serving on an oil commission, then being governor and having further executive experience-- that would resonate with women all across the United States. (Tip of the hat to Yukio Ngaby at Critical Narrative)

Plus, I might add, running for vice president of the United States with a newborn infant on her shoulder. Not to mention being the youngest, and first female, governor in the history of her state, the mother of five children (one of whom is serving in the infantry in Iraq, one of whom is a teenage mom, and one of whom has Down Syndrome), who can run a professional fishing vessel and hunt wild game, and who is married to a man who won the Iron Dog five years in a row and built their family home. She has played hardball with major oil companies, both domestic and foreign, and won, with excellent results for her state's and our nation's energy future, once we get around to using our own oil and natural gas resources.

Yeah, that's a boring, substandard story. Ask any Democrat.

Elsewhere, Krauthammer has predicted that Sotomayor will be confirmed for the Supreme Court seat. It does indeed look like Sotomayor's hand of race cards are all aces. But then, there's always a joker in the deck. Obama has played so many cards in his short time in office that he is bound to turn one up sooner or later.

Cinderella Supreme

Every day Obama reveals himself to be more of a divider, causing rifts where no rift need be, and opening rifts that do exist into chasms of discontent.

The latest example is Obama's shilling of the soon-to-be-vacated Supreme Court seat as a kind of Cinderella's glass slipper, available to that special woman eager to dance to his tune, particularly if he can leverage the Court appointment with an appeal to Hispanics.

How about a little class, please, such as was exhibited by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor when she said, "A wise old man and wise old woman will reach the same conclusion in deciding cases."

Sonia Sotomayor went out of her way to go on record as "disagreeing" with that comment. "I would hope," she stated, "that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

Now that's a divisive statement.

Particularly for someone whose job is interpreting the U.S. Constitution.

That statement definitely was not designed to calm the roiling waters of discontent over illegal immigration; it contains no word of comfort for those invested in American, not Latin American, culture; it offers no crumb of hope for those who desire strict adherence to the Constitution as it was written.

Nope. The coveted prize of a seat on the Supreme Court should go to a self-expressive Latina who spent her young years sweeping out fireplaces at Princeton and Yale, garnering insights into the law unavailable to colleagues who didn't have access to "the richness" of the experiences of Latinas because they weren't Latinas. They were everybody elses whose experiences were, by her definition, impoverished.

Too bad Eva Peron and Joan Baez weren't available to write the U.S. Constitution. We all know how much better it would have been.

But never fear. We can depend on Sonia Sotomayor to set policies from the Bench that the Founding Fathers used all their knowledge and skills to prevent.
