NYC Outlaws Food Gifts to Homeless (Salt Alert!)

Yep.
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s food police have struck again!

Outlawed are food donations to homeless shelters because the city can’t assess their salt, fat and fiber content, reports CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer.
Big Nanny, who never heard that half a loaf is better than none, has decreed that hungry homeless people should go without rather than eat too much salt or fat, or too little fiber. Or else.
Glenn Richter arrived at a West Side synagogue on Monday to collect surplus bagels — fresh nutritious bagels — to donate to the poor. However, under a new edict from Bloomberg’s food police he can no longer donate the food to city homeless shelters.
It’s the “no bagels for you” edict . . . . And no lots of other nutritious foodstuffs.

The ban on food donations was made by an inter-agency task force that includes the departments of Health and Homeless Services.

Obviously NYC officials prefer that NYC bakers literally cast their surplus bread, bagels, muffins, and cookies upon the waters of say, Long Island Sound, something that makes the author of this post very sad indeed.

UPDATE 4/1/12: Read what one very brave, very responsible, conservative, working homeless woman has to say about the policy of gov't standing between hungry people and food. If you have the cash, you might send her something to help her along.

  1. This is what happens when you have incompetent public health officials advising ambitious policy makers - the blind leading the deaf. As always it is the least fortunate that are at the recieving end of this gratuitous 'love.'

    The bureacrats don't have their peer-reviewed evidence on salt correct, but driven by their sense of self importance, feel that the ends justify the means. The problem is, they haven't seen the ends yet. Maybe this trial, using the homeless as lab rats, will give them some idea. What a country!

  2. Gub'ment war on charity. Charitable organizations are competition for the socialist god-state.

  3. Yeah, my homeless friend went off about this. She doesn't get very emotional all that often, but this did it.

  4. @anonymous -- How well you put it! It's the "gratuitous 'love'" between blind public officials and deaf policy makers that the non-leftists of this country are trying to escape, before it destroys us.

    @Liberty -- I hadn't thought of that, but of course, it's true.

    @Odie -- Anger is by far the more appropriate response.

    @girl -- I thought of your homeless friend when I read this. New York City is just catching up with my area, where the local soup kitchen folks do their best to make decent meals from mostly expired and stale foods but are prohibited by law from accepting donations of any prepared foods that are not "packaged," even when the foods are perfectly fresh and have been prepared by professional chefs and caterers. Many's the time I've been picking the brown stuff from old vegetables to salvage enough greens to construct a salad in our soup kitchen while the director (under penalty of law) refused donations of huge pans of luxury meals left over from elite banquets. One-size-fits-all solutions belong in the same place as those who invent them.
